Shepherd’s Fold shows are always jolly, so Larkspur went into the most recent one, having not competed for several years. She shot delightedly around the 9, comfortably low jumps to collect a “clear round” rosette.
We both enjoyed it so much that I put in a late entry for the next class, which was over the same course but 10cm higher. Another clear round was hers for the taking but unfortunately she had a stupid rider. Having walked the course several times, checking each clearly marked jump, and ridden it once already, when the starting bell went I set her at the first jump and there were yells from the judges — wrong course. I’d jumped the dear mare over the last jump backwards instead of the first one in the right direction. That should have meant elimination but as this was a fun show, we swung back and started again, dropping a pole at the first jump because of human error. She cleared the rest of the course with panache, and we were awarded a most unmerited rosette.
Everybody enjoyed watching Larkspur jump because she obviously loved it, and because she is so old (29 this coming Spring). I took photos of her wearing her legitimate rosette and held by her groom, Elias.

For her, photo shoots are a waste of grazing time. Her ears are back in every picture, maybe also because she was tuning in to the surrounding sounds of the show in full swing.
