- Dewormer
Every horse/pony or donkey that comes into the Unit is de-wormed at least twice. We also de-worm every equine that we can at our primary care clinics. It is expensive, but it has proven to be the best way of improving the condition of working horses and donkeys, and helping…
- Electric Tape for paddock fencing
We have 15 isolation paddocks at the Unit – the horses and donkeys that newly arrive at the Unit are put here initially to make sure that no contagious diseases are spread, and that worm infestations are contained. Once assessed, the animals go out to the larger pastures with a…
- Fly Spray
We go through gallons of this! Donkeys are very susceptible to fly bites, and often end up with bleeding open sores from flies.
- Gumpoles for paddock fencing
We have 15 isolation paddocks at the Unit – the horses and donkeys that newly arrive at the Unit are put here initially to make sure that no contagious diseases are spread, and that worm infestations are contained. Once assessed, the animals go out to the larger pastures with a…
- Sponsor a bale of fodder
Feed is very expensive, as all horse owners know! Not only do the horses in our care need to be fed, but we also deliver feed and fodder into the township coalyards and scrapyards each winter, as there is no delivery service by feed merchants there. The owners try to…
- Sponsor a horse/stable
It costs us on average a thousand rand a month to keep one horse at the Unit. It is not possible for us to keep horses on a permanent basis – we would love to be a retirement center – but we have to spend our precious funds where they…
- Sponsor AHS vaccines
This is one of the deadliest killers of equines in underprivileged areas. We just do not have the funds to vaccinate every equine, but we try to do it for cost if the owner is willing to pay.
- Sponsor farrier costs for one horse
SPONSOR FARRIER COSTS PER HORSE @ R65.00 per month We do not have our own farrier, but the farrier who attends the Unit horses charges us much less than the going rate. Our township Inspectors have learnt the basics to cope with emergencies when out in the field.
- Sponsor one inspection
Each month we carry out an average of 108 inspections, and see approximately 650 horses during any given month. Due to the vast area covered by the Unit, our travelling costs are horrendous – this year alone we have averaged 10,000 kms per month.
- Sponsor the gelding of one stallion
We have a waiting list of literally hundreds of horse and donkey stallions who need gelding. We are trying to stop indiscriminate and in- breeding particularly in the townships, by selecting suitable stallions and gelding the others.

VOLUNTEERS – just your time!
We are often approached by concerned people who volunteer to assist us with carrying out inspections. Unfortunately, this is not legally possible, as there are many legal implications.
- We welcome volunteers to the Unit to help with the animals in our care, but need people who have practical experience with equines. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff to supervise and teach volunteers.
- People who wish to volunteer but have no equine knowledge can help with cleaning tack, stables, and carrying out repairs etc.,
- Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult preferably with equine knowledge.
- An indemnity form must be signed by all volunteers.
We often need volunteers to help us by manning PR stalls at events on our behalf.
DONATE YOUR OLD/UNUSED TACK – just a little effort!
We desperately need second hand tack and blankets to improve poor, dangerous and damaged harnessing in the townships.
We also sell donated tack in our second hand tack shop at the Unit.
You can also help us by telling us if you have anything that we could make use of here at Highveld Horse Care Unit.
To do so please click here and give us your details and we will contact you!
